World Fair Trade Day Saturday May 9th.

Everyone loves free cake. We’re celebrating WorldFairTradeDay on Saturday 9th May by offering our customers in the shop some free Fair Trade Cake made by our enthusiastic supporters including fairly traded ingredients wherever possible.
We love this picture of Niamh and her cake. She bought all the Fair Trade ingredients and designed and made the cake herself –  how fantastic is that?

5 favourite Products!

Hi Everyone, I’m Liz 🙂

I’m a student at Leeds Trinity University studying Nutrition and Food Bsc and I’m on a one month placement with Justicia and Fair Trade Bolton.
I have to say it has been an eye opener! Having had lectures on Fair Trade and ethical food production, I thought I knew more than most about Fair Trade, in actual fact i had no idea just how many Fair Trade products are out there!
Did you know you can buy Fair Trade knickers?
Anyway i thought i would blog my top five favourite Fair Trade products which you can find here in Justicia!

1) Fair Trade Knickers! – forget Bridget Jones big pants, these knickers are super stylish, floral patterned, 100% cotton knickers which are made by women in Malabar Coast, Kerala India, and give them much needed employment. They come in a pink see through drawstring bag so you can see the pattern and they make lovely presents! They come in sizes 8-16 and they only cost £5.50!

2) Wooden Boxes – bought from a company called Namaste, these boxes are hand carved in a repetitive heart pattern (see the picture below). They range from a small square box for £2.30, small chest for £7.00, Medium chest for £10.00 and large chest for £13.00. I love these! I bought the small square one today for a friends birthday present!

3) Molasses + Cloves Technically two separate products but being a keen baker I know for a fact molasses are not available in my local supermarket, and cloves are very expensive, for a very small amount. Your can get a 350g jar of pure black strap Molasses here for just £1.80 and a 25g box of cloves for just £1.00, madness!

4) Chocolate – now it had to appear on here somewhere! I knew that Fair Trade chocolate existed, being one of the more well known Fair Trade products which is available in all supermarkets, but i had no idea of the range! Divine a Fair Trade chocolate company is 45% owned by the farmers who grow the cocoa used to make the chocolate. The variety of flavours are amazing and include, your regular milk, white and dark, but also white chocolate and strawberry, milk chocolate and butterscotch and dark chocolate with ginger amongst others! You can also get chocolate coins, mint and ginger thins and Fair Trade Easter eggs! (i am slowly working my way through the flavours whilst on placement!)

5) Silver bangles – last but not least is the silver bangles found in the jewellery cabinets in Justicia! All made from Fair Trade silver (did you know you could get Fair Trade Silver and Gold?) They come in a variety of designs and range from £9 – £21. They make beautiful presents, and when you buy one a gift bag comes free!
